Student Biography

Christopher Barlow is currently in his 5th year of study in the Architectural Engineering program at the Pennsylvania State University.  Upon graduation in May 2017 he will receive both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Architectural Engineering as well as E.I.T. status.  His academic focus is Structural Engineering.

Chris's professional experience includes numerous sectors of the building industry and disciplines of engineering beyond structural.  In the summer of 2015, he interned with Brinjac Engineering in the Lighting Department and collaborated with archtiects and engineers on large-scale projects including the San Diego Central Hosptial and the Bryce Jordan Center.  In the summer of 2016, he joined Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger as a member of both the Structural Engineering and Building Technologies teams in the Washington, DC office.  His contributions included analysis of truss members for the Children's National Medical Center and several field reports pertaining to the weather-proofing of a large apartment complex in Fort Totten.  Having little prior experience in Lighting Design or Building Technologies prior to these internships, he adapted and learned quickly.

His academic achievements have also distinguished him as a highly ambitious learner.  He started taking graduate-level classes a semester ahead of his peers and received acceptance into the integrated BAE/ MAE program without hesitation. He was also selected by faculty of the Stuckeman School of Architecture to be a part of a new studio course.  During this course his team took a project from schematic to final design using BIM and compiled a report exceeding 300 pages on topics including enclosure systems, foundation design, floor vibration serviceability, and more.  An electronic copy of this report can be made available upon request.

Outside of work and school, Chris also enjoys a number of hobbies uncommon to most engineers.   He is currently serving his second year term as President of the Penn State Book Club and second term as a Fiction Committee Member for Penn State Kalliope.  He is also an active member of the Penn State Photo Club.  In his remaining free time, he also enjoys writing and painting.  Some of his personal work is shown below.  More can be found on his professional webpage here.
